More rugged than ruggedized PCs.  At a fraction of the cost.

The factory floor can be pretty rough on a computer, to say the least. Temperature extremes, vibration, jolts, dust and corrosion can wreak havoc. But with automation applications for manufacturing environments popping up everywhere, computing devices now play a critical role, right in the thick of it all. Fierce competition and ever tighter margins mean uptime and reliability are critical factors in meeting production goals. And the typical Human Machine Interface (HMI) apparatus used by operators often depend on PCs that were never designed to withstand these rigors.

Now, NComputing is delivering a real-world computing solution for manufacturers that is:

  • Cost-effective
  • Reliable
  • Rugged
  • Flexible
  • Scalable

Deploying NComputing in manufacturing environments drives immediate cost savings because the number of required PCs is cut dramatically. Even better, the PC itself can be moved into a protected environment connected to factory floor via a LAN, eliminating the need for costly ruggedized enclosures or components. Plus, IT staff can provide maintenance and support remotely, limiting intrusion on the shop floor and restricting access only to authorized personnel. And because the NComputing access devices are tiny—with solid-state components, no moving parts, a sealed enclosure and no fans—no matter how harsh the environment, they’re survive.

How it works

The NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today’s PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of applications use only a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing’s virtualization software and hardware tap this unused capacity so that it can be simultaneously shared by multiple users, spreading out the cost of the PC, and typically providing four times the number of stations for the same money.

  • Cut PC acquisition costs cut by 60%
  • Dramatically reduce IT complexity and costs
  • Increase security from viruses and malware
  • Substantially increase uptime and overall reliability

NComputing offers two product lines. The X-series is great for workgroups where the shared PC will be within 10 meters of the users. The L-series uses standard Ethernet network equipment and cables, so the shared PC can be located as far away from the users as you like. In factories, the PC should normally be locked away in a safe and clean space, which is often more than 10 meters away.

Getting started

Follow the predictable and repeatable formula for success that others have already proven. Start by getting a demo unit and testing it in your lab. Then do a pilot rollout in one factory or one production line. After that, the reliability, functionality, and savings will be impressive enough that you will want to do rollouts throughout your facilities.
