  • November 07, 2011 NComputing, Citrix Targeting Enterprise Virtualization Market

    By Kevin McLaughlin, CR
    November 07, 2011 3:37 PM ET

Already established as an up-and-comer in the education and SMB desktop virtualization markets, NComputing is now tackling the enterprise through a new partnership with Citrix Systems (NSDQ:CTXS).

As part of the partnership, unveiled late last month at Citrix Synergy in Barcelona, the companies have married NComputing's Numo system-on-a-chip technology with HDX, a Citrix technology that optimizes graphics and multimedia performance on virtual desktops and mobile devices.

Raj Dhingra, CEO of NComputing, said the two companies are working on a reference design of HDX running on the Numo system-on-a-chip for OEMs to integrate with their thin clients, tablets and set-top boxes. Fujitsu and LG have already signed up, and expectations are that other OEMs will follow, he said.

"Enterprises that are looking at virtual computing solutions with XenDeskop or XenApp will be able to get better user experience taking advantage of our system-on-a-chip," Dhingra said in an interview.

NComputing also intends to launch an NComputing-branded "ultrathin client" with Numo and HDX in the first half of next year, according to Dhingra.

NComputing is working with Citrix salespeople and channel partners to address the needs of enterprise customers, and it's promoting the idea of an ultrathin client because innovation in the thin client market has been steadily dwindling, said Dhingra, who joined NComputing in April from Citrix.

"The typical thin client is a PC disguised in a different form factor, and the cost and complexity is the same as it is with a PC, because you're still managing an endpoint," he said.

With its Numo system-on-a-chip, NComputing is creating a new type of thin client that offloads many of the functions previously handled by software onto the hardware itself. This will translate into lower cost devices that consume less power while maintaining a high level of performance and a desktop-like user experience, said Dhingra.

Partnership with Citrix will help NComputing gain knowledge of the specific areas that enterprises have earmarked as critical when looking at desktop virtualization, Dhingra said.

"Enterprise customers are looking for features that are enterprise capable -- for example, the connection broker needs to be high performance, the virtualization software must integrate well with storage and networking, and the management console," he said.

  • October 01, 2011 How Virtual Computing Helped Save Our Elementary School Computer Labs by Troy Rad September/October, 2011 US: Canadian Teacher Magazine

Here’s a scenario that might seem all too familiar in schools these days. You need to create a thirty-seat computer lab, but you have limited budget and purchasing thirty individ- ual computers is way out of reach.

That said, you want your students to be working on up-to-date hardware and software, so here’s another approach. Instead of buying thirty computers, you select IT technology that allows you to use only one large computer in your lab and thirty students could work on it simultaneously. Each child would feel like they have their own computer, with their own monitor, mouse and a keyboard and would be engaged in their own project. The “brain” of the operation would come from the one computer. This PC would contain some very powerful software that works with a small but also powerful hardware device to enable this functionality.

Sounds like science fiction? Actually it’s real. It’s called Desktop Virtualization and this technology allows the schools of the Rocky Mountain School District in BC to provide state-of-the-art computing resources to save money as well as reduce their carbon footprint.

In this article, I will share out how my colleague, Dave Hlady, and I worked with technology and service providers NComputing and BlueCurl to install Desktop Virtualization at Lindsay Park Elementary and Edgewater Elementary schools. This technology is allowing two of our schools to provide students with the opportunity to learn on the most up-to-date com- puting equipment at a fraction of the cost.

  • September 30, 2011 NComputing X-Series Desktop Virtualization Kit

    by Rahul Sah
    PC Quest: Hardware Reviews

Doing more with less is a mantra for just about every organization today, which is why there's a constant search for innovative IT solutions. Well, here's one of them --nComputing's X-Series desktop virtualization kit, a product that lets you share a single PC amongst multiple users simultaneously. Considering that even ordinary desktop PCs today have become very powerful, one doesn't realize that most of the time, only a fraction of this compute power is actually used. It's only when you use the PC for some graphics or multimedia intensive work that its resource utilization increases. That's where the nComputing device comes in pretty handy.

Then Computing X-Series desktop virtualization kit comes with the vSpace desktop virtualization software, and a PCI card that fits inside the space-saving computers, and NComputing XD2 access devices. X-Series is available in two kits, X350 and X550. The X350 kits contain three XD2 devices, thus allowing one PC to be shared with 4 users. While, X550 has five XD2 devices, that allows six users to share one PC simultaneously. Thus, with two X550 kits, one can have 11 users sharing the host machine. Unlike thin-client architecture, the X-series solution doesn't require any computational power at the client's end. That means, all you need to have for each user is a monitor, PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

    Snapshot
Price: Rs 4,000 per seat (3-year warranty)
    Meant for: Desktop Virtualization
Key Specs:Kit includes: vSpace desktop virtualization s/w, PCI card for expansion, XD2 access devices
Pros: Easy to set up, each user gets virtual workspace, energy efficient
    Cons: None
    Contact: NComputing, Chennai, Tel: 431988800
Write to:pcquest@cybermedia.co.in with name of the product in subject for more info.

The PCI card once installed in the host machine, can be connected to each of the XD2 access devices through CAT 5e or CAT 6 cables of up to 10 meters. Cables of these specifications are required since the XD2 device uses power over Ethernet (PoE) to power up the connected devices, i.e. keyboard and mouse. The access device itself has no CPU or moving part that consume power, so it just consumes 1 watt of electricity as compared to a full-fledged CPU that could consume about 100 watts.

    Cost savings and performance

Taking a scenario where you have to provide a desktop to four users, then either you can allocate each of them a dedicated machine or use NComputing's solution. A desktop with Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB RAM and 500 GB HDD would cost about Rs 35K, and for four users the bill would be Rs 1.4 Lac. While NComputing's X350 desktop virtualization kit costs Rs 12,000 for three users and add to that the cost of the main host desktop, it comes to around Rs 47k. Plus, the cost of three monitors, keyboards and mouse. This is far lower than what you would pay for four desktops, and their power consumption throughout their life.

To check the performance, we connected X350 PCI card on a Windows 7 based machine having an Intel Core i7 3.4 GHz processor, 2 GB DDR3 RAM and 1TB HDD. Connecting the three XD2 access devices we setup the desktop environments for four users with vSpace. We used the Geekbench benchmark to check the processor memory performance on each user's desktop. On the main machine, when no other user was connected, the score came out as 8395. Then logging on from each user, we simultaneously ran GeekBench on all four instances of virtual desktop and the minimum score of the four that came out was 7257. This clearly shows that each user's experience is quite seamless without much of a performance drop even when they're all running simultaneously.

Bottomline: This is a very cost effective desktop virtualization solution for organizations that need to provide desktop to a lot of employees.

This device lets you share a single PC amongst 11 users, thereby allowing massive cost savings not only in terms of fewer PC purchases, but also on power consumption, and table space...read more
  • September 29, 2011 NComputing L300 Review-Virtual Desktop for SMB's

September 29, 2011 IT Channel Insight

Ncomputing’s L300 virtual desktop device is like a replacement for thin clients. It provides businesses a way to deploy desktop computer services to additional employees without having to purchase or lease desktops or thin client hardware.

According to Ncomputing, The L300 model provides “a rich multimedia playback” capability. The unit also supports a number of USB peripherals. The L300 unit has ports for USB keyboard and mouse along with sound and microphone capabilities. The unit that was reviewed only supports VGA monitors. We would hope and presume DVI monitor capabilities will be added in the future since many new monitors have DVI connections. If nothing else, the user can install a VGA to DVI converter.

After looking at pricing from a few different sources, we found out that the L300 by Ncomputing can be purchased for less than $200 at the time of this review. Both Windows and Linux operating systems are supported by Ncomputing. Linux support is limited to Ubuntu Linux. At this time, Macs are not supported by the Ncomputing VSpace software. The VSpace software permits up to 30 virtual desktops to be connected to one share host PC.

We look forward to working with NComputing on expanding our businesses together. “saidSasikanth, Strategic Business Unit Head, Enterprise SBU (Value Added Distribution), Redington India Ltd.

NComputing customers in India are deploying some of largest and most innovative virtual desktop infrastructures in the world. For example, the company has made a huge wave in education, providing ICT to millions of children who otherwise would not have access to these important skills development and learning tools. NComputing is the de-facto standard for education in the majority of Indian states like Andhra Pradesh where 50, 000 NComputing virtual desktops are deployed in 5,000 schools to benefit 1.8 million children. The company recently announced success with Indian state education ministries of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Maharashtra.

IDC[1] ranks NComputing as the number one vendor of enterprise client device shipments in Asia Pacific.

The NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today’s PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of applications use only a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing vSpace virtualization software taps the unused capacity in a PC and shares it among multiple users as if each person had their own computer. Each person enjoys a full PC experience by connecting their own monitor, keyboard and mouse to an NComputing access device, which is then connected to the shared PC. The access devices snap into place in minutes, are almost impossible to break, and save on maintenance costs because only the shared PC requires ongoing service or upgrade. The devices use just 1 to 5 watts of electricity which also reduces the need for air-conditioning and qualifies many educational institutions schools and organisations for substantial energy-efficiency rebates.
