Do you have a tentative date when it could be used in Ubuntu 8.04 ?

Yes... my view ncomputing should just concentrate on 8.04...

instead the Linux beta program http://www.ncomputing.com/Support/SupportForums/tabid/213/forumid/13/postid/10/view/topic/Default.aspx

wants to support 7.04... why bother providing a solution that will last only until next year? Canonical's support for 7.04 will end next year...

If they go with the latest LTS ie 8.04.. now that would be a solution... counting 5 years server support from canonical... would be like killing 5 birds with 1 stone...

NComputing sees the relevance of this issue and understands the support cycle for Ubuntu, but at this time we are focusing only on the 7.04 release. We have noted your request for consideration in subsequent releases.

You can grab an old copy to this address : http://mairie.thorigne-fouillard.fr/download/nct-linux.zip

BUT : this is an old version, a version which was here before NComputing change his website, and before they take out the old forum ...

NOTE : There is no usb support with this version, no support too !

Not that I expected it to, but the old version does not appear to work for either Ubuntu 7.04 or 8.04 running in a virtual machine. Upon attempting to connect an LS-120 a black screen appears and a dialog box informs the user "Linux TS Negotiation Error". The only option is to cancel out and go back to the connection screen. I just thought I'd let everyone else tyring this solution know what I found.

For L-Series to connect correctly to the linux station, you have to configure it to be "Linux compatible", it is on the setup menu that you can change it.

So the dialog box informing the user "Linux TS Negotiation Error" is just a generic phrase saying that your terminal is not configured correctly to use a linux host.

Thanks for the reply. I remembered that setting after I posted. It is not available on the LS-120 setup, unless I'm missing a firmware update...

I will give it a try with one of the L230s we have.

If it works in Linux, I am seriously considering buying a couple of them for my home. I seem to always have two older computers that are on but not used much, and my newer computer is always on because I use it constantly. With the ever-rising cost of energy, it would make sense to invest in a cost-saving solution such as this.

You can try to install NComputing software on a Windows machine (latest version is 4.03.094 while writng this post) and update your L-120 with the Windows one, so you will get the really latest firmware for your terminal.

Note : befor buying a lot of units to run on a Linux host, take a look at your cpu usage ... the linux version, sometimes, seems to use too much cpu.

I do have the LS-120 working in a Windows Server 2003 trial in a virtual machine. Windows is not a suitable solution for home use, because of licensing issues. That is why I am interested in NComputing developing Linux.

Thanks for the tip regarding CPU usage.

[Edit:Update]

I was able to get the L230 working with Ubuntu 7.04 in a virtual machine. There is no audio at the station, even though it is working in the virtual machine. Overall speed is a little pokey as well.

I couldn't agree more. I too wish NComputing would develop for a long term support distribution.

And why 7.04 and not 7.10? Very curious. Perhaps NComputing already had some working software for 7.04 that broke with later versions and they didn't want to bother rewriting their code when they didn't see much interest in it? I'd like to stir up some interest by making more posts in this forum. I hope the beta program goes well.

Any news on this? The product claims to support Linux on the box and manual, but there's no software on the CD nor on the site... I've seen news that nc would focus on Linux after releasing the Vista software, and that was a year ago, but still there's nothing to download on the site...
I have a client who bought 2 l230 to add to the Linux server they have and now they have to think if they'll return the l230 to the store since it doesn't support Linux... I'd like to know what to tell the client? That support for Linux will soon be released or if he was fooled with false marketing claims...

@bsantos: Wow. I didn't realize it was that bad. I just looked at an L230 box and found that, indeed, it states an operating system requirement of "Windows or Linux". I knew that Linux support was claimed for the products when NComputing was still calling them Xtendas and eXPanions. Since then I bought the L-series to work with Windows at my employmet. I wasn't concerned about Linux until I considered using them for my home. NComputing could be making some bad business decisions. There is a disclaimer on the box: "check website for versions and details", but I don't think that is good enough to constitute "support". Obviously, if you are standing in the store looking at this box and you run Linux, the implication is that the device can be used with Linux. You can't check the website then and there. I think someone would have a claim if they bought a truckload of them to use with Linux only to find out there is only a closed beta going on. NComputing needs to be careful.

I presume that linux clients would have to use the thin clients system rather than wait for an answer from ncomputing.

Has anyone had any issues with mice?

If a scroll bar is present i.e. firefox or file explorer the scroll bar acts as if it is being clicked and held....even applies to the volume tab on the gnome taskbar.....Happened on 7.04 then updated to 8.04 and still having the same issue. Anybody?

OK how about this... has ANYONE, gotten the x300's to work, under ubuntu, without virtualization software?

I have it working, and it works well, except for the mouse issue.

What type of mouse were you using? 2 button, 3 button? I have also played with the settings in the xorg.conf file in relation to the mouse with no luck.

See the mouse on the host computer is identical to the other 3 mice on the terminals...and the host computer's mouse works fine. Which is why I am starting to think that the NComputing drivers either

a) are flawed when it comes to mice.

b) just simply do not work with two button mice. (I am trying to track down a PS/2 mouse with a scroll wheel, suprisingly difficult)

So, if ANYONE could let me know if they have had it working, that would be fantastic.

cherlihe,

Is it possible to publish your success story step by step ?  What commands did you use in the terminal ?  What changes did you make to Ubuntu? Is it complicated ?

NComputing – X300’s on Ubuntu 8.04

- Ideally you want to have a fresh install of Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04)

- Install PCI card (I did this before format/install of OS, when installing linux the kernel is configured to work with system hardware that is found, so best bet is to have it in or else it might not work )

- Connect x300 Hardware

- Install all the updates (you will need an internet connection (you will be notified of them upon first boot, upper taskbar, you will see a red 'down' arrow. install them)),
Also run ‘sudo apt-get update’ and ‘sudo apt-get upgrade’ from a terminal after your updates are done.

- Run the debian package (.deb package) for the x300 drivers– worked flawless under ubuntu 8.04, yet under 7.04 there were a number of dependency issues, (yet I didn't install the 7.04 personally and don't know what had been done to it).
-you will know right away if there are dependency issues, it will notify you before you can click the button “install this software”, if you see a green checkmark you’re OK.

- Add Users – relative to the number of terminals (kid1,kid2,kid3)
- “sudo adduser kid1” and repeat
- Add the users to the Audio Group for Sound on the x300’s
- “sudo adduser kid1 audio”

Registration of the x300’s

Go into the NComputing Console under System/Administration/ and enter the serial number and activation codes that are on the bottom of the x300 hardware.

When asked to register, I entered some information, although I doubt it matters.
Whatever you enter, it will fail on upload to the NComputing registration servers.
Ignore
Reboot.

Once rebooted, if you still have blue screens on the terminals you may need to go back into the NComputing Console, click on “Stations”
The blue screen on the terminals will say “NCX- Linux Station # 2 stoppped” as opposed to ‘unregistered’ which then you need to return to the registration step.

This (ncomputing console) is where you can control the status of a terminal, basically ON or OFF.
At the top left of the window you will see some controls, specifically a play button. This will turn ON a station, as the stop button will turn it OFF.

Below is a copy of my .bash_history (what was typed in the terminal)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
exit
sudo adduser client0
sudo adduser client1
sudo adduser client2
cd /
ls
clear
exit
adduser client0 audio
sudo adduser client0 audio
sudo adduser client1 audio
sudo adduser client2 audio
exit

I don't think I missed anything, hopefully that works for you. If you are not fluent with Linux, and you recieve an error upon startup of the x300 driver installation, i suggest you reinstall Ubuntu, and start from scratch, only takes about an hr start to finish.

Let me know how you made out!

Hi cherlihe,

Sorry I was away. Thanks for your informative answer.  I was surprised that the ncomputing worked very well with Ubuntu. Unfortunately now I realized that my system is 200 and not 300 so I presume that it won't work on mine.  Is it so?
