Hello,

EDIT:  Just wanted to update this post to specify my problem a bit more in-depth.  Turns out I'm not having the problem as specified in the link below.  My problem isn't every logon, but rather every other logon after joining a Windows 2000 Server domain.  In figuring this out I have found that it doesn't matter if I'm using a privileged account on the domain, or an admin account on the domain.  Also an admin account that is local to the computer is doing exactly the same thing.  I have isolated this computer so that no group policies are being applied at all, but still having the same issues.  This was on a Windows XP Pro SP3 customized install, and as such may be causing the problem.  Right now (still waiting on first bootup) I'm installing a completely "clean" install of XP SP3 from CD and trying it out again before any hotfixes are loaded.  We'll see how this goes this time through.  Yet again I'm going to make sure no group policies are being applied from the domain.

EDIT2: My solution to the problem is here:

Well I followed the steps as listed here:

http://na3.salesforce.com/_ui/selfservice/pkb/PublicKnowledgeSolution/d?orgId=00D500000006uQp&id=50150000000I803&retURL=%2Fsol%2Fpublic%2Fsolutionbrowser.jsp%3Fsearch%3Dv88%2Bsp3%26cid%3D000000000000000%26orgId%3D00D500000006uQp%26t%3D4&ps=1

I was having the problem that was described where winlogon was crashing during login and throwing me back to the login screen so tried to use v88.  The problem though, is that without enabling Windows 2000 compatibility mode you get the error about not supporting SP3 and WITH it enabled it says it doesn't detect a VGA video card.  Sort of a catch 22 here.  I had installed v94 (I think that's the version, can't check right at the moment) and it just kept giving me problems logging into a non-administrator account every other attempt it seemed.

The video adapter I'm using is the integrated Intel Q965/Q963 Express Chipset, and the drivers are current.  If anyone can offer a suggestion it'd be much appreciated.

Edit:  Just a little bit more detail, here is the exact message I get when running in compatibility mode (without compatibility mode it seems to detect the drivers just fine):

=============================================================
(title)"Not a complete program"

"The video adapter have not installed drivers!"
"Adapter Intel(R)  Q965/Q963 Express Chipset Family - PCI bus 0, device 2, function 0"

"Do you wish to ignore this warning and continue NCX-2000-XP installation?"
=============================================================

If I choose No, it of course just closes the program.  If I choose Yes, I get this error:

=============================================================
(title)"Not a complete program"

"There is not found VGA card with proper driver installation!"
"Please install properly all video card(s) drivers!"
=============================================================

I found a solution to installing v88 for XPSP3 without using compatibility mode at all. It requires changing the registry key in windows that is used for detecting your service pack level.

If you go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows

and change CSDVersion from 0x300 (SP3) to 0x200 (SP2), and reboot, Windows itself will detect as being SP2. v88 will now install without errors about the video drivers not being detected by the setup program in Windows 2000 compatibility mode. Going to reboot with 0x300 again here in a moment and install the latest version on top of it and see if I have better luck with the Winlogon problem.

Okay, so I got v88 installed and updated to v92 then afterwards, but apparently that didn't help at all. Still having the Winlogon crashing problem upon every other logon, regardless of whether the user is an admin or privileged user.

Oh, and one other quick note - I got worried on the first reboot that I had messed something up with the install using the "fake" SP2, but apparently it was just detecting an old file from v88 that isn't compatible with SP3.  Just updated and got no more errors relating to incompatibilities.  As for the Winlogon problem though, as it hasn't gone away, not sure installing v88 had any positive changes.

Just updated my original post to specify exactly what my problem is (as to why I was trying to install v88 in the first place).

Found a solution to my problem!  I can't change the name for the topic unfortunately, so I started a new topic with something a bit more appropriate here:

Hope this helps you folks on SP3!
