We are running a Server 2003 and have installed Microsoft Virtual Server. We have created a Virtual XP Pro machine and are connecting to it with 30 L-230 boxes in a classroom. From the server and virtual machine there are no device driver errors. From the L-230's, in device manager, there is a yellow exclamation point next to nComputing UTMA USB Host Controller and I can't attach a USB memory stick to our terminals to be read. Any help would be appreciated. I have updated the software and the terminal's firmware.  Thanks.

Double click on the yellow exclamation then choose "update driver", Windows will search it-self and re-install the driver correctly.

This doesn't work. It appears to be a problem with MS not supporting USB with Virtual machine. We may have to go VMWare.

I'm working with a Virtualbox virtual machine, and it works like a charm.
May be USB is not enable in your virtual machine ? I did have the same problem, but when i did check the USB support, it worked.

Are you using VMWare or Microsoft Virtual Machine? Doing some internet searches seems to indicate that MS doesn't support USB for Virtual Machines. I went in the policies of the Virtual Machine and made sure the USB support was enabled. Where are you doing this? Thanks.

I am using Virtualbox (Innotek / Sun) : you can get a copy from http://www.virtualbox.org

I have an old VirtualPC instance, and no, it seems that it does not support USB, so you can install Virtualbox and enable USB support with it.

FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!

Here's what we did.
- Installed VMWare 1.06 - this has a hardware version of V4
- Installed our XP Pro image and installed nComputing - latest version - this is where we were stuck and couldn't use the USB and had a device manager error
- Installed VMWare Beta 2.0 R2 - still no worky Now here is the fix
- Stop the VMWare service
- *** Upgrade the hardware version to V7 ***
- Add Hardware
- Add USB Controller
- Start the service and we are cooking with gas!!!!

BTW, we found that VMWare was better and more robust than MS Virtual Machine.
We found Virtualbox kind of useless and not very feature rich.

It is stange that you did not get the USB working with VMware 1.0.6, I have one running with this version and the USB is correctly installed and  works.

Any way, you found your solution !
