I have just installed 6 L230's. Running from a XP SP3 server.
I have tried everything, the sessions disconnect and then re-connect totally at random. Not impressed since I have post-grad students showing up tomorrow.
I have searched everywhere the closest was posted under X300 to backup and delete the DIMSNTY.reg key because of XP SP3.
This seems very fruitless, but, any ideas?

Are using autologin. That's why when there is disconnection it will reconnect back, I think. Below show that you need to reinstall the ncomputing software from v90 first and then v94 to minimize the disconnection.

We have found that for some customers, they experience a terminal login to Windows problem after installing NComputing software version NCT 4.03.094. We have also found a workaround for this until this is corrected in our next software release.
The symptom for this problem is: The L-device user attempts to log in to host PC with the L-terminal, and after seeing the Windows user login screen, and after entering their Windows login credentials, instead of logging into Windows, the terminal returns the user to the L-terminal Server Selection screen without presenting any error screen.
This problem seems to occur with users who are installing version 4.03.094 (v94 for short), of the NComputing NCT-2000-XP software for the first time, or if they are upgrading from the software found on the driver CD, 4.03.084 (or v84).
For a temporary workaround, to correct this login issue we recommend an alternative installation sequence that involves installing software version 4.03.090 first, then upgrading from v90 to the new v94.
NOTE: If you have WIndows XP SP3 installed, you will need to run the v90 installer in "Windows 2000 compatibility mode". This is because the v90 installer performs a compatible operating system check, and SP3 was not released at the time v90 was released. The v90 installer will not install with SP3 installed. To get around this, run the v90 installer in "Windows 2000 compatibility mode by:
1) Right click with mouse on installer executable ("setupnc.exe").
2) Select "Properties" from context menu
3) Select the "Compatibility" tab
4) Check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" checkbox.
5) Select from the compatibility dropdown menu, "Windows 2000".
6) Select "Apply" for the Properties dialog box.
7) Select "OK" for the Properties dialog box.
8) Now run the "setupnc.exe" by double clicking on the icon with mouse.
For reference, here are the steps:
1) Uninstall current software
Please start by uninstalling your current version of the NCT software. You can do this through the Add/Remove Programs utility in Control Panel, or by starting the uninstaller in the NCT-2000-XP folder in the Start Menu.
NOTE: If you already have v90 installed, then you do not need to uninstall the software, and may skip to the final step.
2) Install software version v90
(Please see note above regarding installing v90 on XP SP3)
Once you have uninstalled the software, and restarted the computer (your terminals will not be able to connect till this point), please go to http://www.ncomputing.com/download/L230_r090.3.zip and extract the folder's contents to your desktop.
Now, from the extracted files, locate and run "setupnc.exe" to install v90 of the NCT software.
3) Register device serial numbers.
After the installation completes and your system reboots, you must then register the NComputing software and device serial numbers to be able to use the NComputing automatic software update.
4) Update software from v90 to v94
Now you can update the product to the latest version, without encountering the station disconnect issue. Use the NComputing software automatic update feature, or alternatively you can download the software direct from here:

I don't have v90, the box came with v91 which auto updates to v94 during install...the link in the last post to v90 does not work. Everyone seems to have slightly different issues with this. My UTMA's can login to a user no problem, when sitting at idle waiting for a user they disconnect and reconnect. Moreover, when a user logs out of there session the UTMA goes to the connect screen and connects to the server again...this is why I have had to set them to autoconnect. |

| I have noticed a pattern, looks like this normal as the host clears disconnected sessions, although it clears all sessions whether they have an old session current or not.........wish this was clearer in the documentation. Happens around every 5 minutes, this makes sense. |

The following solution was obtained from the knowledgebase after searching for "winlogon":
L-Series: "winlogon" - Windows login station disconnect NCT software v94
|

We have found that for some customers, they experience a terminal login to Windows problem after installing NComputing software version NCT 4.03.094. We have also found a workaround for this until this is corrected in our next software release. This can be referenced as a "winlogon" error.
On the host PC NConsole, the terminal status may briefly show "winlogon" error.
This problem seems to occur with users who are installing version 4.03.094 (v94 for short), of the NComputing NCT-2000-XP software for the first time, or if they are upgrading from the software found on the driver CD, 4.03.084 (or v84).
Overview
Winlogon failure is an issue that has arisen in recent NComputing software releases, including NCT versions 91 and 94. This issue can appear in any Windows system that is part of a domain, following the installation or update of NCT software. This issue manifests differently depending on what product you are using, but appears to arise from the same root cause.
Solutions
There are multiple solutions available for this issue, which have been divided into two categories. All of the solutions require that any existing installations of NComputing terminal services software be removed, though deciding which solution will work best in a given environment is, of course, entirely up to the customer.
The first category of solutions is the "Domain Cycle" group.
For Windows XP SP2 or SP3 users
Note: For Windows XP SP3 users unwilling to remove their PC from the domain, please contact Technical Support for additional workaround options.
This solution requires that you install the NComputing software on a machine while it is not part of the domain. On new installations, this would simply require that you install the software prior to adding the PC to the domain. On existing deployments, you will need to remove the computer from the domain, install the NComputing software, and add it back to the domain.
The second category of solutions is the "Downgrade-Upgrade" group,
For Windows XP SP2 users only
This solution is applicable for XP SP2 customers who are unwilling to remove their Host PCs from the domain. This solution involves installing a previous (non-SP3-compatible) version of the NComputing software, and then updating to the latest version again, if desired. This works best on XP SP2 systems.
For specific solution steps, please scroll to the appropriate guide below.
Software Downloads
These solutions use several different versions of the NComputing terminal services software. Here are download links corresponding to each version:
• NCT v90 - www.ncomputing.com/download/L230_r090.3.zip
• NCT v94 - www.ncomputing.com/download/L230.zip
L-Series Domain Cycle Solution
To eliminate the Winlogon Failure bug in L-Series NComputing access terminals, please take the following steps.
For a Host PC that is not yet a member of network domain:
As a simple preventative installation practice, install the NCT software on your NComputing host computers prior to adding them to the domain. If you do this, then you will not have to perform the below steps.
For a Host PC already added to a network domain:
(Note: The following solution involves removing your NCT host from a domain; please check with your network administrator before proceeding):
1) Remove Existing NComputing Software
• If NCT-2000-XP is already installed, uninstall it from the system
• Reboot your computer.
2) Remove Host PC from Domain
• Right-click "My Computer" and select "Properties"
• Click the "Computer Name" tab
• Click "Change"
• Click the "Workgroup" bullet and enter "WORKGROUP" as the workgroup name.
• Restart your computer to save the changes.
3) Reinstall NComputing Software
• Download and unzip software version 94:
http://www.ncomputing.com/download/L230_v94.zip
• Run setupnc.exe.
• Restart your computer.
• Confirm that your terminals can login successfully.
4) Add to Domain
• Right-click "My Computer" and open "Properties" again
• Click the "Computer Name" tab
• Click "Change"
• Return your computer to the domain (if you do not know the domain name or the necessary credentials, please consult your network administrator)
• Restart your computer to save the changes.
L-Series Downgrade-Upgrade Solution
To eliminate the Winlogon Failure bug in L-Series NComputing access terminals, please take the following steps (Note: this solution is not applicable for XP SP3 systems):
1) Remove Existing NComputing Software
• If NCT-2000-XP is already installed, uninstall it from the system.
• Restart your computer.
2) Install "Downgrade" Version
• Download and unzip the L-series version 90 software:
http://www.ncomputing.com/download/L230_r090.3.zip
• Run "setupnc.exe"
• After the installation completes, restart your computer.
• Attempt logging in on the terminal to confirm that the issue was resolved.
3) If Desired, Update to Latest Version
• If desired, you can now update successfully to version 94 by:
1) Download and unzip software version 94:
http://www.ncomputing.com/download/L230_v94_update.zip
2) Running the L230_v94_update.exe
(Note: One or more serial numbers must be registered to enable updates).

The logged in sessions seem to be very stable, the disconnections, although not documented, look like normal function with the unused sessions clearing themselves by disconnecting and re-connecting. The pattern is around every 5 minutes which is what the setting default is. However this does look like an issue with the network and the TS/UTMA, easy to be mistaken and had me troubleshooting the network for 4 days!........wish we could get some clarification. One thing that was sent to me was this............ Disconnecting the host from the Network whilst building makes sense....... Winlogon Error: • Winlogon is experienced only when the host PC is on a “network domain” at the time of installing with our latest software: 4.03.092 for X and 4.03.094 for L • “Winlogon” error is an inability of NComputing terminals to log onto the host • For the x300 an error message is posted to the screen and then is followed by the station exiting windows. • On the L-series the error message is not seen but the when the device tries to logon, the user is sent back to the NC server logon screen (L device doesn’t connect) • Winlogon is not specific to Windows XP SP3, it also occurs on XP SP2 • We have several workaround solutions but the most straightforward workaround is to prevent the issue from happening by installing the software on the host when it is not connected to a domain. Therefore a pre-install recommendation is provided below • If the customer has the issue or detailed questions on subject, these should be forwarded to Technical Support Pre-install recommendation for NComputing X300 or L-Series Terminals to prevent Winlogon Error When installing the current versions of X300 or L-series software (4.03.092 for X and 4.03.094 for L, both released in April) it is advisable to install our software when the host computer is not on a Windows domain environment. NComputing recommends that your initial install of software or any updates to existing software be done while the host is NOT on an Active Directory Domain. This precaution is to avoid possible installation conflicts that may be inserted within the domain. Such conflicts can result in an error that will prevent Ncomputing terminals from logging onto the host within a domain. To avoid the potential conflict simply remove your host computer from the domain during the installation/update process, and then add it back to the domain afterward. If the error has already occurred the customer should uninstall our software and then reinstall when the host is off the domain (and remove KB941693). NComputing will address these exceptions in a future software update. If there are further questions please contact NComputing Technical Support before proceeding with the installation. The support team has others ways to work around this the logon error; if these are needed please put the customer in touch with your local support team. Technical Tip & Solution for Winlogon NComputing APAC TechSupport www.ncomputing.com (These windows domain alternatives 2 & 3should be offered by the support team only.) • 1. Preferred method (for “blank” PCs – not on a domain): o Do not put PC on the domain. o Install our latest software o Add PC to the domain. • 2. Alternative method for PCs already on a domain: o Take PC off of domain (switch to “workgroup”) o Install our latest software o Re-add PC to the domain o NOTE: administrators should back up the user data and save the user profiles before doing this, since moving PC off and back onto a domain might cause a profile issue. • Alternative method (involves downgrade/upgrade of NComputing software, plus regedit): a. Uninstall current NComputing software b. If on SP3 (if SP2 skip to step C): i. our old software installer doesn’t install on SP3, so the customer must Spoof the installer to think the PC is still SP2: ii. Regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Windows> CSDVersion iii. A value of "0x00000300" tells installer PC is SP3; to spoof installer PC is SP2, change to: SP2, change to "0x00000200" iv. SP3 users only: (NOTE: Don't forget to return this registry entry to its original value after installing and updating the NComputing software in step d.) c. Install “old” N-software (X88 or L90) i. http://www.ncomputing.com/download/x300_88.2.zip ii. http://www.ncomputing.com/download/L230_r090.3.zip d. Now the customer can update software to latest current version (v92 for X or v94 for L) Rev. 20080805 / Released by APAC TechSupport team |
