I've got a group of 10 L-series devices connected to 1 desktop running as the server.  It's a mixture of L-series boxes, not one particular type.  (none of them are the Lx30 types though)  I've got 1 that will, in the middle of the user working, drop it's connection, go back to the server selection screen, and get "stuck" while trying to reconnect.  If you power cycle the device, it reconnects and picks up where the user left off once they log back in.  We're running XP SP3 with NComputing version v94.  None of the other 9 devices drops off like this one does.  So far as I know, the network connection is fine and I've tried a different patch cable.

 

Any suggestions?  Should I try updating the firmware on the device?  I can't find anything on the site here about firmware.

To address the "stuck:" when the device drops, the server goes out to search for the missing unit. Apparently it can actually create an excessive amount of traffic. The off/on cylce you do might be time enough for it to stop looking. You could try to just leave it for 2 minutes and then log back in.

Your problem overall sounds like a traffic problem. Are you using a hub or a switch? If you switched the port that this particular box is on at the hub does the problem move to a different box?

The box is on a 24-port switch along with the other 7 or 8 boxes in that area. The "server" is on that switch as well. (along with other company computers). I just ran the firmware updater from the setup too, to see if that helps anything. Although I'm not sure what that update did other than take the schema from 71 to 73. All other data on the info screen stayed the same.

We upgraded all of or L series labs to Gigabit switches, Cat5e cabling, and a Gigabit NIC in the server.  Took care of 95% of our dropped connections.

Except that hooking the L-series boxes to a gigabit switch won't actually have any effect. They only connect at 100mb anyway.

I am with WPSITA on this, I use Gigabit switches and don't have dropped connections. Cheap Gigabit switches (SMC 8 port).

But if the devices only connect at 100MB anyway, I can't see what a gigabit switch will accomplish.

But your other computers on that switch may be causing the issue. Given that the Switch I am using only cost $100 CDN I think it is an inexpensive trial.

Well, changing out switches isn't so easy in our corporate environment. In that particular closet, I've got 4 nearly full 10/100 switches and 1 gigabit. I've put that drop on the gigabit switch with no luck. I just got an L130 in (as replacement for a broken L120) so I'm going to see how that behaves.

 How many computers and peripherals do you have in your environment? And most importantly can you switch all the extra stuff off the same subnet?  PCExpanion software and lots of MS software are "chatty"  most of your bandwidth could be sucked up in "checking."

I'm going to try switching a couple of Expanion connections around at their drops and see if that happens to make any difference. It just seems odd that it's the same station every day. I've got connectivity, the darn thing just freezes for a few minutes at a time a few times each day.

I've had this happen before, hate to say it, but changing out the switch made it go away.
