Hi, Im having a problem with PC Stations displaying "reading flash data". The message appears when i turn the Stations on. And practically, the Stations are unusable since the windows log-in screen won't appear. This problem happened to quite a few Stations already, but not at the same time.

Can any1 offer me some insight about my problem? Thanks before.

From your reply I assume the ncomputing unit is working with ncomputing login screen after the reading flash data before windows login screen. If you don't have the ncomputing login screen, then probably the unit is faulty. Not sure whether the unit have a reset button or not. If not then, what sort of anti-virus did you install at your host machine? What version of ncomputing software did you installed? A complete protection anti-virus like kaspersky might cause the windows login fail (Recommended: McAfee, AVG and etc).

Did you put the fix ip address for the host correctly on the ncomputing unit? Is the host running on DHCP? If it is running on DHCP, it is advice to fix static ip address on the host.

Hope this help.

Hello,

Thanks to those who've replied to this thread, I appreciate the help. Unfortunately I still have no clue YET as to what's causing the problem.

roms: I thought the same too but the Station just  wouldnt boot up to the setup screen. It just freezes at the "reading flash data" screen no matter how long I wait.

jtlim98: Yes, you are right, the station doesnt get to the ncomputing login screen. The stations I have at my office do not have the reset button, I've looked everywhere. I've also tried to install several different anti virus ranging from McAfee to AVG, but still to no avail, the Stations just keep experiencing the same problem. So far I already have eight cases on my hand, thus I've decided not to use what few Stations I have left before I could find the source of the problem.

I did give each of the Stations a fixed (static)IP address. I had no problems connecting the Stations to the server and stuffs were going along great. That was until I turned on the Stations the next day.

Well, once again I appreciate all the suggestions. Hopefully I can get this problem dealt with soon.

Do you have good clean power where you are? It almost sounds as if you are frying the units out. By the way are you using L120, L100, L200?

Hello,

I've suspected problems with the power source, I'm gonna install a UPS at my office. I'll update this forum if it worked. Thanks.

edit: I'm using L200 stations, btw.

Hello,

I'm wondering if by now some1 has a solution / explanation for this problem? Cause I am kinda desperate, I have tried several different approaches, but nothing seems to work. I'll describe the network setting I use at the office.

I basically split my office network into three, I'll name them setting A, B and C.

********setting A********                      ********setting B********                              ********setting C********

1 server                                                 2 servers (different versions)                      1 server

1 PC Station (L200 factory A)            2 PC Stations (both L200 factory A)           2 PC Stations (both L200. 1 from factory A, 1 from factory B)

network device: D-Link wifi router    network device: 16 ports D-Link switch    network device: 8 ports D-Link switch

not connected to the internet             not connected to the internet                      connected to the internet

no UPS                                                  UPS                                                                 UPS

--------------------------                             --------------------------                                       --------------------------
RESULT:                                               RESULT:                                                        RESULT:
PC station is still running after         both PC Stations are down                         PC Station from factory A is down after 1 day of usage
2 days.                                                  after just 1 day of usage.                             PC Station from factory B is still up n running.

--------------------------                             --------------------------                                       --------------------------

I'll explain further about the settings. The settings were set up and started running two days ago. All the Stations used in the above settings were all brand new, fresh arrival. PC Station from factory B which is used in setting C is an exception. It was from previous batch of PC Stations bought from factory B. There were eight of them, but after several experiments, its the only one left that is still working. So you can call it an anomaly of some sort.

Setting A, setting B and setting C are NOT connected each with the other. And for the PC station used in setting A, it is still working up to now (the network has been running for 2 days now).

I'm running out of ideas trying to come up with a solution. So any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Okay I think we have all gotten ahead of ourselves here in making some assumptions about your setup.

I have read back over this thread and there are some holes :
What is your server hardware? Brand, CPU, RAM, Video, Harddrive type (IDE, SATA, RAID)
What are you using for an OS?
What type of Anti-virus are you using?
What firewall are you using?
Do you have Qttask.exe running on any of your machines?

I guess we need to know for each setting A, B & C. Or maybe we should start a new thread for each of your setups?? Up to you.

Questions about your setup:
Factory A - is this a location or where you got your L200 from?
In setting A - are you using the L200 wirelessly?

If you are really pressed for time you might be better off contacting Ncomputing support by phone.

Hello,

hjkcga: I appreciate your help and here I'll list the servers' spec n other stuffs you asked for.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------SPEC---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-server spec for setting C (built it myself):

  CPU: E6550 Core2 Duo @ 2.33GHz

  RAM: 2GB

graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE

  OS: XP Professional SP2

anti virus: currently running trial version of AVG n in the past I used McAfee

firewall: currently none but previously I used firewall bundled with McAfee

-server spec for setting B (built it myself):

  CPU: Q6600 Core2 Quad @ 2.40GHz

  RAM: 4GB, but since

graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT

  OS: XP Professional SP2

anti virus: currently running trial version of AVG n in the past I used McAfee

firewall: currently none but previously I used firewall bundled with McAfee

-server spec for setting A (old school Toshiba Satellite 2400 A740):

  CPU: Pentium 4 @ 1.60GHz

  RAM: 512

graphic card: S3 Graphics Super Savage /IXC 1179

  OS: XP Professional SP2

anti virus: currently running trial version of AVG n in the past I used McAfee

firewall: currently none but previously I used firewall bundled with McAfee

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Qttask.exe, i only know that its associated with quick time but i dont have quick time player installed on any machine. I double checked and I do not see qttask.exe running in the background.

May I know why did you ask this particular question? Could it somehow interfere with the PC Station? Because I tend to think that this is a hardware problem e.g: faulty electrical installation leading to spoilt PC Station (fried chip?). But I have tried several ways like installing UPS but to no avail.

As for factory A, I meant that as where I got my PC Station from. You see, I thought that the vendor I first bought the Stations from (I just refer to the vendor as factory A), is the problem. But then when I bought Stations from another vendor (factory B), the same thing still happened so I guess the problem is not with the vendor.

In setting A, I do not use the PC Station wirelessly.

Here's how it looks when it gets stuck on reading flash data:

I hope I have provided enough information. Thank you.

So it is the old technology that is working the best. Would it be possible to connect all of your L200s from everywhere to the Server A? This way we could eliminate the L200s as a problem.

I have seen other people with leading edge machines have problems until the drivers catch up. Usually this is more of a problem with the X300s not the L series. Somewhere on this new board somebody had shut down two cores in their BIOS to get everything running. But I am sure it was an X300 they were using. You might try that. Before that though I think you should try to update to SP3 and the new version of the Ncomputing software. Maybe the new drivers are already there.

EDIT  QTTASK.EXE hugely drags on the system for some reason. Even if you have quicktime installed, QTTASK.EXE needs to not startup with the machine boot-up.

If you are still getting the 'reading flash data' error...i suggest RMA

This has happened to me with a L200 and nComputing told me the firmware was corrupt and non-recoverable.
