Hello to all...  I am now supporting around 200 L series 110, 120 and 130 Terminal boxes.  I was wondering if there any User Familiarization Documents regarding the day to day operation of these devices as I see nothing posted in our organization for the employees to refer to.  I was in the process of building a "Best Practice" user tip sheet and wanted to see what was here on the N-Computing site.  I searched the site for this information and all that I found were issue specific documents.  So, in a general sense, does anyone know if this information has been compiled for the "L" series and if so, is it available to Support Personnel to provide to their customer base?

Larry,
I have an un-official list. Some of it is in my setup, some of it is for users
Here is some of it.
1. re map My Documents to a Network drive: keeps windows profile from getting large
2. The users are asked not to save directly to a jump drive or the desktop
3. If the Terminal is used my multi-users I ask the user to log out.
4. If the Terminal is used by only one user, I ask them to "lock the computer"
5. I suggested that they only plug in "approved" & Department issued devices in the usb port, if I catch them doing other wise I shut the usb port off
6. I check their local profiles on a regular schedule. Too large and csrss.exe can cause problems.
That's all I have, let me know if you come up with others.

Thanks

Thanks John.  I'll definitely follow up on those items that you suggested, they seem logical and reasonable from a business standpoint.  We do. however, have the USB access locked out globally.  I'm new to the premise of Terminal Boxes and want to empower my customers to be able to recover from whatever error the boxes throw at them and get back working.  To meet this desire, I'm trying to publish a "cheat-sheet" to post in those areas.  I read all 38 pages of the "L" Series user guide and am culling out the information that could be useful at their levels.  While the team here has been doing this quite well, we have recently gone to roaming profiles within an AD realm and have experienced a signifigant slowdown in through-put.  I'm thinking that this might have to do with the size of the user profiles but being a new person on the team, I' am finding that there is no set collection of user rights for people doing the job that I'm doing.  So until I am provided with those rights to those servers which contain the roaming profiles, I'll just have to wing it...

None the less, Thanks for your input.

Larry - to answer your question, I have never seen such a list.  And I have been on this board since its inception.

So maybe us users can build one. So here are my suggestions:

Reboot the system every day. Windows can be set to do this.  I personally use a UPS and RPS-ATX card.

Ensure you get a server version of the virus software to keep the load down.

Install the shared directory patch from Windows XP.

Turn off automatic updates to Windows.  Only install the patches when you have the time to trouble-shoot.

Always download the PCExpanion software through the updater instead of installing  through the updater. This way you have historical versions of the program should you need to go back a version.

Can you share your process for the auto window's reboot. I have one Dell unit that can run up to 21 days then I will have problems for 2 weeks. I would like to schedule a re boot but none of my scripts seem to work.

thanks
John

I use the software that came with the UPS.  However here is the Microsoft instructions on how to use the Shutdown command. It says 2000 & NT4.0, but I checked the command prompt for shutdown /? and got a reply.  (XP Pro).
