I need to have two USB units attached. One for Smart Card reader and one for controlling touch screen. Is it possible to use a split?

Yes, I would use an active usb hub. But first test each usb device first to make sure it is works. I have used a 4 port active hub, hooked up a printer, usb flash drive and dvd burner with success. Some of will depend on how far away you are from the host machine. My DVD burner caused problems when it was more the l230 was more than 25 feet away from (cat5e cable distance) the host machine. It would lock up the host. Printers and flash drives don't seem to have the same distance issue.
